October Student Spotlight: Meet Ian Nelson— From Knee & Back Pain to Squatting Pain-Free Again
Q.What first brought you to Thavma Yoga—and what were you struggling with in
your body at the time?
A.I was struggling with lower back and knee issues. I needed something with
lower impact that also focused on flexibility.
-----------------------------------------------
Q.What’s one surprising result you’ve noticed since starting? (Physical change,
confidence, or mindset shift?)
A.Due to ThaVma’s acute focus on posture and alignment (I can hear Marina
telling me not to sink in my right hip), I never realized that my hips, knees and
ankles were misaligned, which was the likely root of my pain. I’ve started
squatting at the gym again – something I couldn’t do pain-free for over a year.
-----------------------------------------------
Q.Which Thavma Yoga class ;Thavma Method™, Premium 26+2 or Phoenix
Method is your favorite—and why?
A,26+2, hands down. I truly enjoy the difficulty of the spine strengthening series,
especially full locust. Smile through it!
-----------------------------------------------
QWhat’s the biggest difference between Thavma and other workouts you’ve
tried?
A,I appreciate ThaVma’s meditative aspect. Yes, it’s a tough workout and, yes,
you are going to sweat a lot during class but the instructors are excellent
about keeping students concentrated and breathing intentionally through it all.
-----------------------------------------------
Q.If you could tell someone on the fence about trying Thavma one thing, what
would it be?
A.Try it - right now. I had no idea (and, to be honest, no intention) I would enjoy
hot yoga as much as I do.
-----------------------------------------------
Q.What do you feel in your body after class—three words only?
A. Cold plunge, please.
-----------------------------------------------
Q.How has the Thavma community impacted you outside of the yoga room?
A.All of the ThaVma staff and instructors are welcoming and supportive, from
greeting me with a smile when I arrive for class to wishing me well when I
leave.
-----------------------------------------------
Q.What’s one pose or movement you never thought you’d do—but now can
because of Thavma?
A.Dancers. I struggle with balance but with the instructors’ help focusing on
keeping a tight core, proper hip alignment and that thousand mile gaze, I can
make it happen.
-----------------------------------------------
Q.What personal goal are you working on next at Thavma?
A.Floor bow holding both ankles. Holding one ankle isn’t bad but two
ankles…rain check on that.
